The HDMI output supports a 4K monitor at 30 Hz, but is supported with a USB-C to DP cable. I got it with 512GB SSD and an i5 for around 1 380 eur. You can configure it with 2TB SSDs if you want and an i7. I got a Tuxedo InfinityBook S 14 v5 (which is basically the same as the System 76 Lemur Pro) maxed out at 48GB RAM. Fingerprint reader seems to be a hit or miss though, doesn't work on most models. You can also choose to get an AMD GPU instead, avoiding the whole NVIDIA fiasco. I'd personally recommend Dell's equivalent workstation series because most of the outputs can be switched in the UEFI/BIOS between the iGPU and dGPU and none of them require a kernel patch to get working fan control. If you have an older driver version it may work but chances are you'll have to setup reverse PRIME and logout every time you want to disconnect or reconnect the laptop from all outputs to get external monitors working.Īny P series laptop newer than the P52/72 requires a single-line kernel patch to drivers/platform/x86/thinkpad_acpi.c, adding your laptop model to the fan_quirk_table to get fan control via the /proc/acpi/ibm/fan (how thinkfan works on thinkpads) interface working with both laptop fans.Ī whole host of other issues if you're not on a bleeding edge kernel and NVIDIA driver version, from P50/70 all the way to P53/73, likely the same situation with the new P15/17 though I haven't gotten the opportunity to test them. When in hybrid graphics mode external displays only reliably work out of the box with NVIDIA driver version 455.45.01 or newer. If you care about battery life you'll want one with a Coffee Lake or newer CPU and a Turing or newer NVIDIA GPU to enable NVIDIA's experimental RTD3 power management. Passing through the iGPU causes a lot of problems once the VM with the GPU shuts down in both dedicated and hybrid graphics mode and disables the eDP internal display in hybrid graphics mode. The outputs are all hard-wired to the dedicated graphics card for some reason, meaning if you try to passthrough the dGPU to a VM no external monitors can be used. There are a lot of "gotchas" for a power user if you decide to buy any of the Thinkpad P-5x or P-7x series for use as a Linux laptop.
